Oil pulling, the latest fad – but wait there’s Gandoosh!

Gandoosh

Oil pulling has become one of the latest fads to hit the health scene

If you haven’t heard about it already, Oil pulling is a wonderful way to support your oral health and hygiene. Its benefits are far more than what you would think of a mouth wash and better for you than those toxic supermarket ones like Listerine! Plus you can make it yourself at home.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

  • removes toxins from the mouth
  • removes plaque
  • cleans and whitens teeth
  • supports healthy gums
  • reduces teeth sensitivity
  • freshens the breath

How to

  1. Simply take 1 tbsp of warmed organic whole black sesame oil in the mouth. Sesame is sometimes a little bit hard to stand on its own, so you could add a drop of peppermint or spearmint essential oil for that minty flavour. Organic coconut oil is also a good alternative if you would prefer and it has incredible health benefits too.
  2. Swish and swirl the oil around the mouth, back and forth through the teeth until it starts to emulsify (becomes creamy) for around 15 minutes, or however long you can spare. You could do this while showering or getting ready for work in the morning.
  3. Spit it out – do not swallow any of it. Best to avoid spitting the coconut oil down the sink as when it is cold it solidifies and could block up your drain!
  4. Rinse your mouth and spit out the water.
  5. Brush your teeth.

Then there is Gandoosh!

Gandoosh is a little different to Oil Pulling but is similar in action. It is generally used to treat mouth and throat disorders and the oil used can be medicated specifically for various body types and ailments. Remember that simple old warm salt water tonic we used to gargle when we felt a sore throat coming on? Well this goes one step further!

Gandoosh is great for

  • Sore throat and colds
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Sinus problems
  • Excessive saliva
  • Receding gums and gum disease

Simple home recipe and procedure:

  • 1 tbsp organic whole black sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp black salt (Indian grocers sell this) or Himalayan salt
  • 1 tsp raw organic honey (unheated)
  • Warm water
  • For gum disease add 1/4 tsp black pepper as well
  • Move around the mouth and gums for 1 minute, gargle if necessary, spit out (do not swallow any of it) and rinse with warm water

We know that digestion starts in the mouth, and Ayurveda believes improper digestion is the root cause of all disease – with this in mind its super important to keep our mouth, teeth and gums in good health. And it takes no time at all. I’m sure you have all these ingredients at home already. Why not give it a try?
